If you've always wanted to work cattle with your horse but didn't know how to start, this clinic is for you! Almost all the cattle work will be done at walk and trot. This clinic is open to English and Western riders, youth and adult. No previous cattle working or roping experience is necessary.
Even if you never plan on working with cattle in the future you will develop a much more responsive and handy horse by giving him the opportunity to work cattle, plus you'll have lots of fun! We'll go slow and start with the basics. This is not for rodeo or competitive sport. We will be teaching and practicing "low stress stockmanship" for practical ranch work skills. We may do some herd driving, penning, sorting and cutting, not as a timed event but rather the way a real working cowboy handles his daily tasks.
Ranch Horsemanship teaches your horse how to listen to your cues and move responsively for gait transitions, stops, roll-backs and turn arounds. Cattle work gives your horse a practical reason for learning how to listen to you, really use his body and move in a variety of ways.
Beginner roping will teach your horse to calmly accept the movement of the rope and teach you how to handle a rope, build and throw a loop along with dally and drag skills. Roping will be done on dummies and live cattle out of the herd. We'll be using break-away ropes on the live cattle. This will be herd roping, not rodeo style out of the box. Ed Dabney will be joined by three very experienced instructors so everyone will have plenty of personal attention.
The clinic will be held in a large covered arena. The arena's full concession stand will be open all weekend with plenty of good food and drinks. Breakfast, lunch and Saturday night dinner concessions will be available for purchase at the arena.
For more information on the arena and stall rental visit www.qcarena.com . Weather permitting, we may have a Saturday night campfire with cowboy poetry entertainment. For overnight lodging there are plenty of hotels and restaurants near Warm Springs, GA. The locals suggest the Meriwether Country Inn www.meriwethercountryinn.com
Clinic fee is $475 per rider. Rider space is limited so sign up now. Please click here for your registration form. Please email training@eddabney.com with any questions. Spectator fee is $10 per day. No reservations necessary for spectators.
Here are a few testimonials from participants in our February 2010 Cow Working Clinic:
Ed, Just wanted to thank you again for your help this weekend at the Cow Clinic. It was a lot of fun, greatly benefitted my horse -- and may have saved me or someone else from serious injury due to his fear of cows. When we left, he saw all of the new cows in the front pasture. He was on high alert, but he was manageable and not dangerous!
Thanks again
Martha

Hi Ed,
I wanted to tell you how much I enjoyed this past weekend. That's more riding than I've done in quite awhile but I couldn't have asked for a better clinic experience. You may hear this all the time but you truly do have a very unique and blessed talent for teaching horses and humans! Everything about the clinic was so well thought out... everything made sense... and Jim and Richard... well, I don't think you could have done any better in bringing them in to the mix! Mike was wonderful support as well. And it was such a pleasure to meet Colleen!
One of the longest lasting lessons I will take away from this past weekend was that I gained so much self-assurance in tackling something new. I never once worried about what my horse was doing. I never felt disconnected with him. I felt as one with him and that is a great feeling. This speaks volumes as to how well the overall clinic was conducted.
You, Jim, and Richard gave us all some great homework assignments. My birthday wish list includes a new Ed Dabney saddle pad and a rope!
